The Two Types of Wireless Meat Thermometers

Now, before I move on to the list of the best wireless meat thermometers, there is a clarification I want to make.

There are actually two types of wireless meat thermometers on the market. The first is the kind that is truly wireless - there are no wires attached to the probes at all. These are rather rare devices and you can expect to pay a bit more for the good ones.

Then you have the wireless meat thermometers that come with probe wires. These are far more common and a lot more affordable. Here, the probes plug into the main digital interface. This interface has a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection that connects to a companion app. It is this feature that makes it wireless.

To ensure that you get a thorough review of the best wireless meat thermometers, I am going to include both types of meat thermometers in this post. However, I am going to separate them into two distinct categories so you can tell them apart more easily.

The Best Truly Wireless Meat Thermometers

Here are the top thermometers that are really wireless:

1. Meater Plus

Best Overall

Specs

  • Range: 165 Ft
  • Power Source: 1 AAA Battery
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: Yes

Dual Probe Capabilities

One of the top features of this wireless meat thermometer is that a single probe has two sensors. Due to this, you can measure ambient temperature as well as internal temperature at the same time.

This feature is a lot more important than most people realize. Even the top smokers and ovens have fluctuations in their cooking chambers. So, having a wireless meat thermometer that can offer an ambient temperature reading as well makes it easier for you to cook your food at the recommended temperature.

High Accuracy

Before I gave the Best title to this meat thermometer, I had to make sure that the sensor was accurate. So, I tested it alongside another meat thermometer. This is a highly accurate thermometer and will show you the precise rate at which your meat is cooking.

I found that this feature was especially useful fast cooking meat like steak.

The sensor that detects ambient temp isn't quite as accurate - I noticed a few fluctuations. However, the sensor was only off by a few degrees and this didn't make much difference to the cooking process.

Good Range

The range on this smart wireless meat thermometer is pretty good. It doesn't always live up to the 165-foot range that is touted by the manufacturer by I have to say that I could sit in the next room and still see what the temperature was.

The only downside is that this digital probe thermometer goes through batteries like crazy. Due to this, I would suggest always keeping a few spares on hand, especially if you are smoking foods for several hours on end.

Person Using Meat Thermometer While Barbecuing Meat

Easy to Use

I have to say that apart from the accuracy what I was most relieved to find about this wireless meat thermometer was that it was easy to use. It is simply a matter of inserting the probe and then syncing it with the app.

A few clicks later and I was able to use the app without any issue at all.

Excellent App Features

I was pleasantly surprised by the smartphone app that can be downloaded to use with the thermometer. For one thing, it was so easy to use. For another, there were so many features.

There was a countdown to show me the rate at which the meat was cooking. I also got a warning when the meat was close to being done.

I also like the app estimates the rate of cooking for you so that you know when you need to start.

Pros

  • Dual sensor capabilities
  • Good range
  • High accuracy
  • Easy to use
  • Good app

Cons

  • Goes through batteries quickly

2. Chef iQ Smart Wireless Meat Thermometer

Best for Accurate Readings

Specs

  • Range: Unlimited
  • Power Source: Rechargeable Battery
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: Yes

Accurate Probes

One of the features that I was pleasantly surprised with was the accuracy of this wireless meat thermometer. I tested it alongside another thermometer and there was virtually no difference between the two. This means that you can trust the probes to tell you the exact rate at which your meat is cooking.

The only thing is that the ambient temperature isn't as accurate. Due to this, I do suggest using another thermometer inside the cooking chamber.

Good Range

Unlike many of the other thermometers on this list, the Chef iQ wireless meat thermometer uses a Wi-Fi connection to hook up to your phone. As a result, you have a much greater range to work with.

Now, does this mean that the meat thermometer has an unlimited range? No - but it is definitely enough for you to wander off into another room or even outside.

Thin Probe

Not only does this thermometer boast a truly wireless probe, but the probe is also a lot thinner than many of the other models on the market. This is great for when you are cooking thinner cuts of meat like steak.

See a thicker probe has a hard time staying upright in thinner cuts but this isn't the case with the Chef iQ probe! So, it doesn't matter what you are cooking, the probe will be able to handle it.

Voice Updates

I love that the hub that the meat thermometer connects to offers up voice-activated commands. This means that you are free to go ahead and work and the hub will keep you updated on what is going on, including the rate at which the meat is cooking.

Pros

  • Highly accurate
  • Thin probe
  • Good range
  • Voice updates

Cons

  • Poor ambient temperature tracking

3. ThermoPro TempSpike

Best for Range

Specs

  • Range: 500 Ft
  • Power Source: Rechargeable Battery
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: Yes

Great Range

The only problem with a wireless meat thermometer that is actually wireless is that there tends to be a limited range. The good news is that this isn't the case with the ThermoPro model! I wouldn't say that it goes all the way up to 500 feet but you should find it functioning just fine even up to 300 feet - and this isn't bad at all!

Great Accuracy

The other thing that I love about this meat thermometer is that it is that you get an accurate reading each and every time. In fact, you can get a reading within three seconds which is great for preventing your meat from overcooking.

As with many meat thermometers, the ambient tracking isn't as great. Still, this is a pretty useful feature to have.

Good Alert System

With the accompanying phone app, you can set a variety of alarms. You can also use any notifications or alarms that have been built into the app. As a result, you will always know exactly what is going on with your meat as it is cooking.

The only downside is that the app itself can be a bit tricky to read. There is a lot of information on the screen at one time and it can take some time to figure out all the different details being shown to you.

Pros

  • Good range
  • Accurate readings
  • Numerous alerts

Cons

  • Tricky to see readings

4. Yummly Smart Meat Thermometer

Best for Smart Features

Specs

  • Range: 150 Ft
  • Power Source: AAA Battery
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: Yes

Excellent Cooking Presets

If you are new to cooking meat, then this meat thermometer is going to make it a lot easier to get the process right. There are so many temperature presets for you to use and they are all set to different meats.

What I also like is that the preset temperatures are based on USDA recommendations guaranteeing food safety.

The only issue is that you do have to be a bit of a tech geek to set up and use the smartphone app. It can take some time to figure out. When you do, though, it is worth the effort!

Great Cooking Programs

I also love that the cooking programs on the app will give you plenty of instructions as you cook your food. You will be told when to flip the food over, when to take it off the heat, and even when to let it rest.

Golden Roasted Turkey with Meat Thermometer

Good Range

I have found that the wireless range on this meat thermometer is pretty good. You can definitely move around your home without losing connectivity at any point.

Magnetic Dock

I also like that the charging dock for the thermometer is magnetic. This makes it a lot easier when it comes to storage. You can stick it anywhere from your refrigerator to your oven.

Pros

  • Great cooking presets
  • Great cooking program
  • Good connectivity and range
  • Magnetic dock

Cons

  • The app can be a little tricky to use

The Best Wireless Meat Thermometers with Wired Probes

Here are the top wireless meat thermometers that come with wired probes:

1. NutriChef Smart Meat Thermometer

Best Overall

Specs

  • Range: 400 Ft
  • Power Source: 2 AA Batteries
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: No
  • App Compatible: Yes

Great Accuracy

One of the things that I was most impressed with about this wireless meat thermometer was its accuracy! It was ideal for tracking the internal temperature of whatever I was cooking. And, when compared to other thermometers, there was barely any variation in the readings. I was able to hit my target temperature each and every time.

And, the probe has a great temperature range which means it works great for grilling and smoking. You should even be able to use it in the oven.

Now like other wireless thermometers, this doesn't come with an ambient temperature sensor. However, I found that I didn't really miss it.

Great Range

I have to say that the Bluetooth range on this probe is pretty sweet! You can easily be in another room and not lose your connection.

The only thing that I should warn you about is that if you move too far away and lose the connection, the app will reset itself. As a result, you will lose any information related to your cook.

Additional Probes Available

Now, when you purchase this wireless meat thermometer, you get two probes with it. However, you can connect up to six probes at once! I really appreciate this feature as it allows you to cook different foods at the same time and still hit the desired temperature for each of them.

Highly Durable

I have to say that as far as meat thermometers go, this one really gives you a bang for your buck. The probes and the cables have excellent temperature ranges, allowing them to withstand some pretty high heat.

As long as you take care of these components, this meat thermometer is going to last you for several years.

Pros

  • Highly accurate
  • Good range
  • Multiple probes available
  • Durable

Cons

  • The app is poorly designed

2. Govee Wireless Meat Thermometer

Best for Ease of Use

Specs

  • Range: 196 Ft
  • Power Source: 2 AA Batteries
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: No
  • App Compatible: Yes

Easy to Read Display

If you imagine that this feature isn't important for a wireless meat thermometer, think again! A lot of wireless thermometers will try to force a lot of information on a small screen and this only serves to confuse you.

With the Govee thermometer, only the current internal temperature of the meat, the minimum temperature, and the target temperature is featured. As a result, you can figure out all you need to know with a single glance.

High Accuracy

At this price point, I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate the wireless thermometer was. It was on par with far more expensive probes. I also like the temperature range - the upper point is high enough for you to use it in an oven as well.

Now, there is no ambient temperature but you can use another probe for this purpose if you like.

Good Range

On paper, almost 200 feet may seem like such a great maximum range. However, what I like about this meat thermometer is that it is true to its word - you can see the internal temperature up to this point.

Woman Measuring Temperature of a Whole Turkey

Multiple Probe Options

You get two probes with this wireless thermometer but you can easily add up to four probes more. You will need to purchase these yourselves but they will be just as accurate as the ones that come with the thermometer.

The only thing to be mindful of is that the durability of the probes isn't great. While they can take some wear and tear, I would be careful while using them and cleaning them.

Great Preset Temperature Settings

I like that there are a lot of pre-programmed settings on the app that you can use. If you are new to grilling or smoking, this can make your life a lot easier.

The alarms on the app are pretty great as well. And, they are loud enough to alert you no matter where you are in the house.

Pros

  • Easy to read display
  • High accuracy
  • Great pre-programmed settings
  • Can add multiple probes

Cons

  • Issues with durability

3. Vauno Wireless Meat Thermometer

Best Value

Specs

  • Range: 490 Ft
  • Power Source: 4 AAA Batteries
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: Yes

Good Range

I really like the distance range on this wireless thermometer. True to the manufacturer's claims, I was able to check the meat's internal temperature from quite a distance away. As long as there aren't too many walls in the way, you should be able to see the meat temperature a few rooms away.

Great Monitoring Features

I like that there are two probes for keeping track of the internal temperatures of the meat items and one so that you can monitor the ambient temperature. Dual sensors are prone to inaccuracy so having two separate sensors allows for better readings.

The only issue I would say is that with all these readings, the app does become pretty difficult to use. You have to program everything just so and it isn't an easy to use app.

Good Accuracy

After some testing, I was happy to see that this is one of the more accurate wireless grill thermometers around. Considering this price point, this was quite surprising but the probe was as accurate as some of the higher end options.

Good Value

Unless you are an avid griller or are at pitmaster level, it is unlikely that you want to spend too much on your wireless digital thermometer. And, with the Vauno thermometer, you don't have to. It offers great value, has high accuracy, and has just enough features to make it well worth the cost.

Pros

  • Good distance range
  • Multiple monitoring options
  • Good accuracy
  • Good value

Cons

  • Difficult to program

4. Yunbaoit Wireless Meat Thermometer

Specs

  • Range: 500 Ft
  • Power Source: 4 AAA Batteries
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: Yes
  • App Compatible: No

Good Temperature Accuracy

Once again, at this price point, I was excited to see such an accurate wireless thermometer. Not only is the temperature range for each probe great but they are on point. Also, when I compared one probe to the next, I got the same reading for both internal temperatures.

One thing that I did note was that the probes were quite long. Due to this, they only work well with thicker cuts of meat. When cooking steak, for instance, you have to be careful that the probe doesn't go through the other side.

Easy to Read Digital Display

Unlike some of the other wireless grill thermometers, this one relies on a wireless remote instead of an app. I actually liked having the remote device because of its display. The screen was large and each detail was placed in an organized way on the screen.

This was true even when both probes were working. Just a quick glance at the screen was enough to tell me what I needed to know.

Fast Updates

Another thing that I noticed was that there were quick updates from the probe to the transmitter to the wireless remote. As a result, I was able to take note of temperature changes within a couple of seconds and react accordingly.

Pre Programmed Temperature Options

This device really warmed me up to remote controlled meat thermometers as it was so easy to use. The pre programmed temperature options that aware in line with USDA guidelines were a breeze to choose. Even if you don't know much about grilling or smoking, this thermometer helps you out.

Pros

  • High temperature accuracy
  • Easy to read screen
  • Quick updates
  • Pre programmed options

Cons

  • Probes are quite long

5. BFOUR Meat Thermometer

Specs

  • Range: 100 - 200 Ft
  • Power Source: 3 AAA Batteries
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: No
  • App Compatible: Yes

Multiple Probe Option

You get two probes with the BFOUR thermometer but you have the option of adding more. Now, this is a feature that is available with other thermometers but what I like about this model is that the information from the app is organized in an excellent manner.

Due to this, you can have probes in four or more food items and you will not have any trouble knowing which probe is detecting which cut. This makes for a fuss free cooking process.

Accurate Readings

Not only did I test each probe against a different instant read thermometer, but I also tested the probes against one another. I was impressed with the accuracy of the readings. There were a few fluctuations during the testing period but for the most part, the probes functioned beautifully.

Good Range

I like how honest the manufacturer is about the distance range of the wireless probe. If there are no obstructions between the grill and your phone, then the range is about 200 feet. If there is a wall, this is cut down to 100 feet. All in all, not too bad.

Woman Checking Temperature of a Roasted Turkey

Easy to Use App

I really like the app. You can choose your desired temperature for each cut of meat. There are also presets to choose from. And, it is very easy to set the information apart for each cut.

The main complaint that I have is that the app doesn't connect as well to Android phones as it does to Apple.

Pros

  • Multiple probe capability
  • Accurate probes
  • Decent range
  • User friendly app

Cons

  • Issues connecting with Android

6. Inkbird Wireless Meat Thermometer

Specs

  • Range: 1500 Ft
  • Power Source: 1 Lithium Ion Battery
  • Dual Temperature Sensors: No
  • App Compatible: No

Good Range

This wireless thermometer doesn't live up quite to the 1500 feet that it boasts. That being said, I have found that it does cover quite a distance. And, if you want to increase the reach, simply move the transmitter further away from the probes. All in all, this is great if you have a larger property.

Also, as it relies on a transmitter, it is ideal if you are in a place where Bluetooth or Wi-Fi will not work as well.

Multiple Probes

I like the fact that you get four probes in this package! This is pretty cool as most other models don't come this close. You can easily check the temperature for a wider variety of foods at the same time.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the probes aren't all that durable. Due to this, you do have to use them very carefully if you want to make them last.

Accurate Readings

I put this thermometer through its paces like all the rest and it really held up. The reading from each probe is accurate and I have that it continues to be accurate even after using the probes multiple times.

Pros

  • Good range
  • Multiple probes
  • Accurate readings

Cons

  • Probes lack durability

How to Choose the Best Wireless Meat Thermometer?

Here are the top guidelines to follow when choosing a wireless meat thermometer:

Truly Wireless vs. Wired Probes

To a certain extent, this does depend on your budget and the kind of distance range you are looking for.

Typically, wired probes offer up a greater range and they tend to have more affordable options. Of course, the benefit of a thermometer that is truly wireless is that you can seal your grill, smoker, or oven completely while cooking.

And, in terms of storage, the truly wireless version is easier to store as you don't have to worry about tangling with all those wires.

Bluetooth Connection Vs. Wi-Fi Vs. Transmitter

If you are looking for truly wireless meat thermometers, then the most common method of connection is via Bluetooth. Others rely on Wi-Fi. The probes with the wires tend to work with transmitters that broadcast the signal.

Bluetooth works fine but the issue is connectivity. Thermometers that use Bluetooth are known to randomly disconnect. This can throw off how the app and probes sync up.

Wi-Fi is a good option if you want to increase the range. Most homes have Wi-Fi running throughout the house. And, if you have an extender that works outdoors, then connectivity will be just as good outside.

If you want to be able to use your thermometer virtually anywhere, then go with the transmitter. These have a great range. And, since they rely on their own frequency, the connection tends to be a lot better too.

Check the Distance Range

When buying a meat thermometer, think of the size of your home or your property before deciding what kind of range will work for you. If you don't mind being a little more careful, I would suggest measuring the distance from your oven, grill, or smoker to where you will most likely be hanging out during the cook.

You can find distances ranging from 100 to over 1000 feet. In general, I would take most claims with a grain of salt.

From my experiments, most thermometers between 100 to 300 feet tend to be true to their claims. Anything beyond this, though, and you are likely to find connection issues after a few hundred feet.

Now, when looking for the distance range, check if there is anything mentioned about the connection in an indoor space. See, inside your home, you have to take walls and doors into consideration. As a result, the connectivity is automatically lower.

Measuring Meat Temperature While Cooking

Consider the Temperature Range

If you only want a thermometer for smoking food, then temp range isn't that important. This is because you will typically keep the cooking chamber below 300 F.

Of course, if you are planning on cold smoking foods, then it is a good idea to get a thermometer that can track very low temperatures.

In case you want a thermometer that also works in grills and ovens, though, then temp range becomes important. Look for models that can withstand around 500 F - this should work for most types of cooking that you want to do.

Accurate Readings

Unfortunately, the only way to know if a probe is accurate before buying it is to read the reviews about it. To be sure that the probe really does work, use it alongside an instant read thermometer or some other meat thermometer to double check the readings.

Easy to Use Settings

As meat thermometers get more advanced, so do the settings and features. Now, if you are tech savvy or have the patience to figure out the instructions that come with each model, then this piece of advice may not apply to you.

However, if you want to keep your cooking process as simple as possible, I would suggest going with the ones that have simple settings.

In particular, look for a remote or app that allows you to customize your cooking process. Most of these have pre pre programmed temperatures and settings and these are great. However, you are likely to need your settings on certain occasions. This helps you to cook different cuts to perfection.

Wrapping It Up

So, there you go - you should go for the Meater Plus if you want a truly wireless version. It offers accuracy, and good range, is easy to use, and the app takes your cooking experience up a notch.

If you want probes with wires, then the NutriChef Smart model is what you should check out. Not only is it accurate and has a good range, but it is also durable and works with multiple probes too!
